Who Am I?

Doula and Birth Advocate

I'm Jess, an ante-natal teacher, perinatal doula and aromatherapist from Bristol.

I have two daughters, Olive & Alba and I love to read, I've tried my hand at writing poetry and children's books and I long to be good at pottery, but I'm not!

I think it is such an extraordinary and incredible thing to grow and give birth to a baby and I am passionate about supporting people to have positive and informed birth experiences. Everybody's birth is unique to them and everyone deserves the same information and support to birth their way.

I have trained with The Original Birth Connection to become experienced in birth physiology, perinatal trauma, inclusivity and advocacy, hypnobirthing, aromatherapy and more.

I am here for you throughout your perinatal year to make sure you know your rights, help you make informed decisions, understand how to have a baby and generally care for and support you.

'Approach birth as an opportunity to have an adventure on the way to meeting your baby'  - Anna Wilde

Specialisms

Every Doula is different just as every birth is. I have trained as a perinatal Doula and taken masterclasses in various specialisms to try and ensure I can assist with births in every form

Advocacy & Inclusivity

As a Doula, I am there to support any type of birth for every type of person. I have attended masterclasses and read a hundred books to ensure I am fully aware and ready to protect and advocate everyone. Unfortunately, people can be met with prejudice in the maternity system so I work tirelessly to ensure everyone is treated fairly, in fact better than fairly, and with the respect they deserve. I will never inform your choices but will help you to make your own informed choices.

Aromatherapy

I am a trained aromatherapist and perfumist and now apply those aromatherapy skills to my birth work. I use essential oils in pregnancy, labour and post-natally and will always arrive equipped with my aromatherapy kit to create some fantastic anchors for you to use in your birth space. I also make my own herbal tea blends, massage bars and, off topic, have been known to bake a lot of bread!

Caesarean Births

There is often a misconception that Doulas only attend physiological or 'natural' births. This is not my scope of practice at all. There are loads of different births and I am here to support each and every one of them. I have undertaken a masterclass with The Caesarean Birth Specialist so I can ensure my clients have all the facts regarding all types of birth

Biomechanics

One of my favourite topics is birth physiology. How does the uterus work - how does your baby tell your body it's ready to be born - how do you encourage your hormones to do the hard work for you? The more you understand your body the better you can work with it. What I have learnt from Biomechanics I apply to my every day life still

Perinatal Trauma

Birth can be unpredictable and for some it can be traumatic. I try to avoid this by preparing my clients ante-natally but birth can also trigger traumatic memories for some people. When we work together, we can talk about any fears you may have and also process any uncertainties post-natally. Being trauma informed means I can help signpost you to the right help if you need it

Breastfeeding Support

Ante-natally, we will discuss your feeding preferences. If you choose to breast/chestfeed then I will be on hand to help you establish that postnatally as well as provide you with loads of info and practical support before you give birth. Breastfeeding can be tough initially. I have trained with the ABM to provide support and will help guide you with positions and latching and also signpost you to further help if you need it. I will also be there to be your cheerleader, refill your water and tell you how incredible you are!
