I'm Jess. I've got two daughters are they are what inspired me to become a doula.
Outside of birth, I love to read, I have tried to write poetry (especially when I was in the depths of my second fourth trimester!). I like making bread and seem to do so almost every day! I love telly and herbal tea and wine. I am a veggie and am getting good at churning out knitted baby hats, the one and only thing I am able to knit.
My absolute passion though is supporting people through the transitions of pregnancy, birth and motherhood. I know first hand how important advocacy is in the birth space but also understand how birth works, how it is helped and hindered. Giving birth the patience that is deserves.
I love to support people, I love to teach and nurture, to feed, to listen and to hold. Being a doula is a dream job in so many ways and if you would like to have a chat about how I can support you, I would love to hear from you.
As a Doula, I am there to support any type of birth for every type of person. I have attended masterclasses to ensure I am fully aware and ready to protect and advocate everyone. I will never inform your choices but will help you to make your own informed choices.
I am a trained aromatherapist and perfumist and now apply those aromatherapy skills to my birth work. I offer essential oils in pregnancy, labour and post-natally and will always arrive equipped with my aromatherapy kit.
There is often a misconception that Doulas only attend physiological or 'natural' births. This is not my scope of practice at all. I am a huge lover of and advocate for physiological birth but have also undertaken a masterclass with The Caesarean Birth Specialist and supported countless medicalised births as well, so I can ensure my families have all the facts regarding all types of birth
One of my favourite topics is birth physiology. How does the uterus work - how does your baby tell your body it's ready to be born - how do you encourage your hormones to do the hard work for you? The more you understand your body the better you can work with it. I also love to encourage the use of biomechanics and body work in pregnancy and birth - finding positions that help your baby into an optimal positions and ease their way out
Birth can be unpredictable and for some it can be traumatic. I try to avoid this by preparing my clients ante-natally but birth can also trigger traumatic memories for some people. When we work together, we can talk about any fears you may have and also process any uncertainties post-natally. If you have experienced trauma, I can offer the 3 Step Rewind Process to help you to overcome it
Antenatally, we will discuss your feeding preferences. If you choose to breast/chestfeed then I will be on hand to help you establish that postnatally as well as provide you with loads of info and practical support before you give birth. Breastfeeding can be tough initially. I have trained with the ABM to provide support and will help guide you with positions and latching and also signpost you to further help if you need it. I will also be there to be your cheerleader, refill your water and tell you how incredible you are!
